Belize Zoo - page 2

The Belize Zoo was a most fantastic treat. Completely unexpected and extremely educational. Located 30+ miles outside Belize City, the Zoo is basically a small patch of rain forest with nets around it. All of the animals have been rescued and many are free to leave but choose not to.

The signage was fun and informative and the guide, Devon, was a font of knowledge. We only spent an hour or so at the Zoo but could have easily spent the entire day. Max's favorites were the Howler Monkeys who you can hear call up to 2 miles away. I spent as much time as possible with the Ocelot. Margaret could not decide if she loved the Scarlet Macaws or the Black Jaguar the most.

Fun story: The Black Jaguar was found under a car by a lady who raised it as her house cat. After it grew too large, she called the Zoo to enquire as to its breed. She decided to donated it after she was told it was an extremely rare breed.

Fun story 2: I was at BC's and asked about an extremely large and beautiful cat. Turns out a few Ocelots still run wild on Ambergris Caye and have mated with domesticated cats. The large cat with a collar I saw was one such offspring.
